Located about 30 kilometres from the city centre, Hoa Lac will cover approximately 17,300 hectares of land in the districts of Quoc Oai, Thach That and Son Tay and be the largest of Hanoi’s five satellite towns.
The other four satellite towns which are planned are Son Tay and Xuan Mai, also to the west of central Hanoi, Soc Son to the north and Phu Xuyen to the south.
Under Hanoi’s plan, Hoa Lac is divided into two major areas, namely the metropolitan area and the green belt, said Le Vinh, head of the city’s Department of Planning and Architecture.
The metropolitan area is characterised by the Hoa Lac High-tech Park, the new campus of the Vietnam National University and new residential areas, which are connected to the city centre by the Thang Long Thoroughfare.
A rail line and a BRT line have also been planned to make it easier to commute between central Hanoi and Hoa Lac.
The green belt includes the surrounding agricultural land, Hoa Lac Airport buffer zone, Dong Mo Lake and Ba Vi National Park.
Hoa Lac is expected to be transformed into modern metropolitan zone with good infrastructure as to reduce the burdens of population and public service delivery on Hanoi’s urban core and bolster development in nearby rural districts.
