Given lack of timely disclosure of Vietnam’s official FX reserves, the recent revelation, which coincided with the announcement of a US$500m loan to Vietnam from the ADB, should be a negative surprise for the market (where latest readings were in the $20bn range) and is a sharp contrast to most of Asia whose reserves are flat (Malaysia, Singapore) or significantly higher year-to-date.
